KUNSTrePUBLIK project, Werkleitz Festival 2010, Angst in Form

Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock – As you wish

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – Hitchcock plays on the potential of language to generate fear and also on its potential to be misused as a means of surveillance. A series of posters will appear in a wide variety of locations in Halle and the surrounding area.

Upon looking at the art of Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock, one walks into a contortion of time, between real and fictional narratives, in which the artist interweaves...

Critical Art Ensemble – Radiation Burn: A Temporary Monument to Public Safety

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – In the demonstration of how to explode a bomb, the CAE deal with the fear of the so-called ‘dirty-bomb’ and how it is described as a real threat in the context of global terrorism and implemented as a means to legitimise relationships of power.

I. Scare Tactics Not whether but when! This mantra dominates the scare tactics that wily spin-doctors like to call the “security discourse”. Apparently – or at...

Folke Köbberling/Martin Kaltwasser – Trash Circulated

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – For the last 10 years Folke Koebberling and Martin Kaltwasser have devoted their work to the issue of recycling, which has to become an increased significance in the future. Many resources like gasoline are limited, the disposal of these products are often not environmentally safe and expensive. Köbberling & Kaltwasser are going to confront the residents of Halle with waste in urban space. The process of packaging waste and transporting it to domestic or foreign depots usually remains hidden from public view.

Capitalism offers solutions for everything. Profit margins are the mainspring. For a dirty business such as waste disposal, the profits seem to be especially...

Leopold Kessler – Fence sharpening

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – Leopold Kessler’s work deals with the demographic development of the Halle region and ironically and succinctly visualizes the fear the “long-time residents” have of the unfamiliar or foreign: the tips of a garden fence are sharpened in anticipation of impending conflicts.

Sharpened edges of iron fences poke the sky in the city of Halle. They reflect the summer sun like shimmering, but dangerous, treasures. They make the fictitious...

Steven Rowell – Background Listening Post

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – Steven Rowell will reactivate a former phone bugging facility that was operated by the Ministry of State Security (Stasi) as a switchboard and control centre for bugging operations in the surrounding countryside. The former telephone switchboard at the end of the village in a small community served to make live recordings of telephone conversations that were held in the surrounding villages outside of the GDR. The facility is still in exactly the same condition as it was when it was abandoned in 1990. On July 17 2010 Steven Rowell will give an introduction to the area and will offer excursions to similar facilities in the surrounding countryside. In September Steven Rowell will present the results of Background Listening in the former facility in the form of an audio station and will publish a guidebook that enables visitors to independently browse through the results of his research.

Steve’s work operates to excavate hidden landscape of infrastructure, militarism and technology; to make visible domains of built and natural environments that...

Antje Schiffers/Thomas Sprenger – Wandern

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – “Fear of being a stranger, of embarrassing situations or of asking for help; fear of being alone in the woods, fear of getting lost or spending the night without a shelter” are some moments that a person journeying on foot might experience. In three different locations, Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger (Berlin) turn local experts into tour guides of fear, in order to teach people – during a hike lasting several days – who are unfamiliar with the location how to be frightened.

Once upon a time there was an area of middle Europe called Saxony-Anhalt that was full of life, industry and culture. People could be heard singing and dancing...

Henrik Schrat – Ravens and Roses

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – Schrat deals in his work with the resurrection myth of Barbarossa and the nearby rosarium in Sangerhausen, Europe’s biggest rose garden, in a city with the highest unemployment rate in the whole of Germany. Schrat attempts, in an imploring ritual, to vanquish the curse on the region of Sangerhausen and dispossess people of their fear of poverty and loss of employment.

The ProjectRavens & Roses is a project that uses simple forms to evoke complex relationships. Ink-black Rorschach tests, pressed rose petals in best folkloristic...

Ella Ziegler – Scion Exchange

ANGST IN FORM, 2010 – In a black market exchange on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic in Spring, Ella Ziegler (Berlin) exchanged goods for Czech scions and used these to cultivate wild seedlings in Halle into apple trees. The process of cultivating trees is always an attempt to integrate a foreign body into an in itself functioning organism. The cultivation of apple trees from Halle using Czech scions and vice versa aims to dissolve the fear of the unfamiliar, on a symbolic and practical level (in both senses of the word: the tree’s fear of the scion and the Czech fruit farmer’s fear of the citizens of Halle).

Scion Exchange describes a horticultural grafting technique, often used to optimize fruit tree stock and yield. A scion is a cutting, several centimetres in...
