Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri – We Draw Our Hope On Berlin

Symposium, August 30, 2007, 8:30pm

For the sixth exhibition in Parcella, a German-Hungarian culture initiative, Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri will project the current struggle against the separation-wall being built in occupied Palestine onto the location of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. Their project entails transferring signs from the existing wall in Palestine, and historical signs opposing the Berlin Wall onto this site which formerly divided the East and West. In so doing, they present the public with a provocative question: How should their experience of and opposition to the wall dividing East and West Berlin transfer to the divisions in Palestine?

In conjunction with their intervention on the park, the artists will organize a screening of videos related to their trips in Israel and occupied Palestine. They will also organize a one-day workshop which will attempt to contextualize the wall in Palestine and offer a space for public discussion. The final part of the workshop will invite participants to join the artists in drawing and placing different signs in the Skulpturenpark.

We draw our hope on Berlin is part of the exhibition series Parcella.

The series is a cooperative project with Lumen Foundation, Budapest. The Parcella exhibition series has has received the generous support of Bipolar, a German-Hungarian cultural initiative. Bipolar is a program of the Federation’s endowment of culture.
