Westfälischer Kunstverein Münster – Where, if not now?

Symposium, Münster, October 30, 2009, 1:15 pm

temporary (guest)performances, artist-run spaces, off-spaces. From the "salon des refuses" in the 19thcentury , during the 60th and 70th until today a divers motivated engagement exists which aims to constitute a public for artistic positions and create space by this.
Through self-organisation places, stages, magazines, exhibitions and art projects arise, often temporary, which assume a huge amount of energie at the same time. The life-span of these initiatives does not rarely depend on spatial parameters or financial ressources. On the other hand the social structure of  different groups plays a key role.
What does artistic practice mean when it is based on an individual or pluraristic background? What are the interests/motivations to create space and public self dependent? Why are artists interested in organisation and mediation of non-commercial artspaces and contents?
What is the relation between artists, who appropriate vacant land to use it as communication-platform and commercial city-marketing strategies
in terms of gentryfication?
In this framework Markus Lohmann (KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V.) introduces conceptions of self-organisation in the example of the exhibitioin series SKULPTURENPARK BERLIN-ZENTRUM, and discusses the chances of spacial and economic adoption-strategies by simulation of institutional structures. This goes along with a presentation of examples from the assosiation's work and pictures of art projects from the last thre exhibition series.
