Spekulationen Ausstellungsreihe

November 2007 – März 2008

In September of 2007, Skulpturenpark's 800 square meter viewing platform and offices were purchased by an outside investor. The same individual also purchased a large portion of the land in front of the building which, unknown to the investor, is Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. Shortly after, KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V., the operational arm of Skulpturenpark, was asked to vacate their space in order to make room for new, model luxury offices. In the midst of this current upheaval, Skulpturenpark is pleased to announce its new exhibition series, Spekulationen (eng. Speculations).

From November 2007 – March 2008, six artists have been invited to make site-specific work at Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. The park consists of 62 vacant lots on 5 blocks of downtown real estate. For years, the land has been most commonly identified for its political history, the Mauerstreifen, or militarized zone within the Berlin Wall. But recently, its property values have begun to react more like the sudden formation of mountains. Driven entirely by a speculative market, the land's value and identity are shifting. Skulpturenpark does not own any property, but when necessary, works with the landowners to present its exhibitions. In Spekulationen, its intention is to present 6 diverse works which add a creative layer to this already rich, however uncertain and changing, landscape.
